Tonight,  I saw an unanticipated result of our current administration's influence on today's youth.

Chandler was describing an efficiency report for Fort Stewart that he had accidentally  "over-seen" while we were in Savannah recently.

His grandfather, an engineering contractor for McLean, had some reports lying on a desk, in a closed binder in the same room the boys were bunking.

Total happenstance report reading,  really.

What Chan was impressed by was the efficiency of the Army as detailed in the report. He was describing how the report listed amount of wattage used per army barrack.

And that's when I spotted it.

He said "Army Buh-Rocks"

Bunk houses by this name would be the current President of the United States.

(And I'm pretty sure he didn't serve...)

We often tease ChanMan about his creative pronunciation skills, and it is a homonym, so, I won't devote any more of this post to something that may embarrass him.

However, it is an ideal time to tack on a little praise-worthy note.

For all the things they are learning to pronounce or spell or do in life, I believe these Brewer kids are well on their way to becoming fine adult human beings.

(May this post serve ever a reminder of this worthy expectaion)

Chandler especially leads the charge in this thing I describe to you now, the others participating with joie de vivre:

They have learned to spot the bright yellow embroidery on  jackets, hats and patches denoting a seasoned veteran from aisles and aisles away.

They know IwoJima, Vietnam, Korea, WWII.

They stand on perpetual watch for the tell-tale car tags and camo fatigues of our service men and women.

They are ever-ready and ever-eager to grab a door, extend a hand, offer the respect they feel is  due:

"Thank you for serving our country"

And to our local First Responders I often hear:

"Thank you for serving our community"

Even the Coast Guard have met with their appreciation...

...and when they were younger, Mall Security and  Citadel recruits too.

(a uniform by any other name still respect demands)

They really are a good bunch.

I'm proud of you, BrewCrew.

VIRGE FLVS Literary Magazine

Two of Logan's photographs were featured in the Spring 2014 Edition of the FLVS literary magazine VIRGE. They can be found on pages 62 and 65.

"UNBOUND" FLVS '12-'13 Yearbook

Chandler and Logan were featured in the 2012-2013 Florida Virtual School Yearbook with their answers to the theme question: "What does the phrase Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow mean to you?"

Chandler: "Take each day as it comes and be ready for the challenges of tomorrow."

Logan: " I think the phrase Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow means that you should seek out what you want to do with your life and to challenge yourself to achieve the goals you have set."

They can be found on page 5.

LoLo's 13th

Logan turned into a teenager back in March... we asked her politely to age backwards, but she insisted on continuing towards young lady-hood. She's doing so beautifully.

This year she wanted a mustache party and she was brave enough to ask for a chocolate cake. You see, a certain family member who shall remain unnamed (but not unidentified)  has decreed that all birthday cakes should always be Jell-O cake...even when it isn't his birthday. Which kind of loses the point of the birthday boy or girl getting to have the treat of their choice. And she does so love her daddy... but apparently she loves chocolate too... enough to break his heart and nix the Jell-O cake in favor of a chocolate one.

I was pleased, because I like chocolate too :) So we went big. Which led to cake disasters, left and right. But it's okay because they were tasty disasters.

Chocolate Fudge Cake with a Whipped Cream & Cherry Raspberry Filling, iced with Black Beast ganache. (Black Beast is a ganache topped torte that we sometimes make for special occasions- a mix of dark & bittersweet chocolate is involved)

Her favorite gift was a guitar.

Logan's Leadership Project

IMG_0562

In FLVS Leadership, the students had to come up with a project that would directly touch/impact the community. Logan chose to collect money and baby supplies for our local CareNet center. She also crafted paper flowers from coffee filters and attached verses of encouragement to be given to women who come to the center. We brainstormed an initiative called Life Change that would utilize purple piggy banks placed within a community- all collected funds turned in to local Care Net center as well as a Life Change Perpetual Showers drive which would be an effort to collect physical item for babies and expectant mothers at set locations (in a similar fashion as Toys For Tots) Together we created a social media drive and received appx. 50 "LIKES" for the page. Unfortunately, this was only a concept and not an idea we have been able to commit energy or resources to at this time. However, it is being kept 'on the back burner' for such a time as we find enough purple piggy banks and willing locations to host collection sites.

Family Birthday

She said "I NEED A PARTY HAT!"
We sometimes call our anniversary a "Family Birthday". Especially during seasons where sitters are scarce and we will be celebrating with the entire family. This was one of those celebrations. We have been very busy with baseball & the business and our family's 'birthday' fell during a particularly Extra Busy Weekend. On Wednesday night, as everyone was busy with Duck Dynasty (I tuned in from my dish washing station in the kitchen) I secretly concocted one of Clay's preferred treats: Jello Cake.
(He's forever in the debt of his mother in law for the passing down of this recipe :)

One thing about Jell-O cake is that it calls for Whipped topping- an element that always makes for a decorating challenge... a blank, white, slippery canvas to be improved upon.

I began to rifle through Riley's small plastic toys for something quirky when I came to these two finger puppets. I was quickly inspired to dress them up appropriately for an anniversary cake. It's just some scraps of ribbon and a few pins but it took concerted effort to get everything just so.

The Family Birthday/15th Anniversary Jell-o Poke Cake:
When I was in between steps on the cake, I was also secretly working on my special gift to Clay. We have always sort of played with those traditional and modern gift listings- usually picking something with a bit of a twist. According to this year's list, the appropriate gift would be a timepiece or crystal. I figured out a different take on a timepiece and that was the 'serious' gift. But, I couldn't figure out what Clay could really use made out of crystal. Somewhere in the brainstorming process, my brain switched to Krystal. So I made him a tiny Krystal...with real crystal onions. :)~ the 'not-so-serious-or-as-expensive-but-my-favorite' gift"

Final touches on the tiny burger were finished around 1 AM. There were multiple coats of glaze to be applied, and a crack in the box to repair due to some miscalculations on the thickness of the cheese combined with the thickness of the mustard...

And then- it was cake for breakfast. Jell-o cake never lasts long in this house, nor can those who devour restrain their forks for long.
The cake was gone almost as quickly as it was made.
And that is how we kicked off our "Next 15 Years" (just imagining what those years hold...children in college & finding their spouses... maybe even welcoming grandchildren...wild, I tell you. And me?  I'm looking forward to every second of it.

Flowers for Micah's Place

The first sample flower  became the property of Riley.
Logan's Sunday School Class made care packages for ladies in the care of Micah's Place. We spent Saturday cutting out a million-dozen (it's a real number) circles, large and small, from decorative paper then assembling them into flowers for the packages. We used a pattern found online.
(Who doesn't love Pinterest? )
Flowers in progress
Flowers closer to the finish
Flowers ready to be shared
Logan was unable to go to the assembling party, but that's another story. The girls were able to give much to the ladies and experience the Gift of Giving to Others. Logan was happy to get to share in the effort.

SS Teacher Connie shared a photo of the care packages all ready to go

Virtual Christmas Card

If you have already gotten a Christmas card from our family in the mail, you will recognize right away that this is our actual Christmas card's cover. (Unless you already live in Florida, then you got something a little different) Once you click on the links, you will see that the letter is the same as well. If you have not received a card in the mail, it is either delayed due to the antiquity of our local post office or...well, I was running low on stamps, see... and I knew that I planned to send this here virtual one... so... please enjoy this version and know we love you very much!

Even if you did receive a tangible card in your mailbox, there is a slideshow of the children in the virtual card.
Rather than try to get one good shot of the children all looking in the same direction at the same time, I had the realization that I could hit the continuous shot button and improve my odds...2000+ still shots later, I had another realization that a movie would be easier and after a little tweaking, we ended up with a stop motion-ish sort of slide show.

Every time I've played it back, I am moved to thankfulness again for the gift of our kids.
We hope this time of year finds you counting your blessings and enjoying the gifts that we have been given by God. They are innumerable, if only we start to count.

UpWards Ends

Logan closed out her first (and likely last) season as a cheerleader the week before Thanksgiving. They were given a team photo at the ending ceremony. Here it is, courtesy of
(go peek at her photos, she's got some nice shots over there)

The Call Back

When I had originally talked to the AMTC judge during Logan's audition, she had made a few comments that seemed to tip her hand that she would be calling back, possibly even the same evening. When I went to bed without a phone call, I thought perhaps I had misread her intentions.

We started to move into the new week without expecting a call back and with a nod toward what fun we had had going to the audition.

But while we were in church yesterday, she left a message on my voice mail and I caught up with her after a few rounds of phone tag. These were her conclusions:

Logan is a cute girl with a cute voice. She doesn't have the pitch of the caliber they need but perhaps it is something she can pursue in the coming years. Because she didn't really meet their standards, she couldn't get a call back for singing.

However, she is receiving a call back for acting and modeling. Her judge thought she had a natural timing and lean towards acting. She had asked for the modeling based on her own judgement that Logan may do well- I am guessing for things such as catalogs, advertisements, et al

The next step are The Bridge- a series of weekend classes held in Atlanta (or New York or LA or a handful of other locations...in case we have family in any of those places that may help alleviate some travel expense) Once she completes The Bridge, she will take part in a professional photo shoot and be given 3 talent showcases of her choice at their SHINE event in Orlando (where network scouts, directors & producers & casting agents are invited)

The deposit is $500

The remaining balance is slightly under 5K and can be made in installments.

There is a full time military and/or ministry discount (Uncle Nick, want to adopt Logan for a year?) and some kind of fundraising that has been mentioned but not explained in detail.

When I explained I would have to go home and talk with her dad about it, and have him on board regarding finances, there was no pressure to act now or lose our spot. We were encouraged to take our time and prayerfully consider what we thought was best to do. We were encouraged to not enter a financial hardship nor proceed if we weren't all on the same page (in other words- they did not seem money hungry to me)

Unfortunately, that's where this story ends. We've not made a decision yet...Someone will be following up with us in the coming days. The judge was kind enough to give her cell number and the invitation to call her if we needed anything or had any questions.

Time Will Tell.
 (It Always Does)

Whether Logan attends The Bridge or not, I know this weekend has boosted her confidence and I am sure more auditions are in her future.
Logan's First Audition

Logan's PreAudition Practice

As I mentioned in the previous post, Logan found out less than 24 hours prior, that AMTC was in town for auditions. With very little time to deliberate, she picked a song and a monologue to sample for her "judge"
She didn't truly settle on which pieces she would use until about one hour before these practice videos were taken. I took them to give her feedback as she practiced... and also, to have my sweet girl singing and acting and being brave on film :oP

We have about a dozen or more takes of both, but I chose only two of either discipline to share. In all, she probably had appx. an hour and a half of practice time before the real audition. I may be biased, but I think she did a stellar job in that short amount of time. It does make me think that she would be well served by in-depth coaching from people who know singing and acting (as opposed to my off-key-no-acting-still-in-my-own-shell-self)

Song ~"I Wish We'd All Been Ready"~ (she'd never heard this song before that morning)

Monologue~Because Of Winn Dixie~

I did not film Logan during her actual audition- I was too busy wrangling a run around Rye. But the judge/coach had Logan read an additional script and sing Happy Birthday- she then asked Logan to model walk, even though Logan had not signed up for modeling...All the while, the judge is taking notes but not sharing any feedback with us.
We left knowing that if they liked anything they had seen, we would receive a call back before 5 PM the next day...if we hadn't heard by then, don't take it personal, God has a plan for us and He's merely protecting us from getting off His track :)

NEXT UP: Waiting For A Call Back

The Audition

Logan Aleece Brewer
This is Logan.

She has always wanted to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

Literally.
She has asked to dye her hair bright red.
She has threatened to change her name legally once she is of age.
And at least one costume in the past consisted of a mermaid's tail.

So, it should come as no surprise that Logan also wants to "sing and dance"
I believe wanting to act is just another way to end up as Ariel on stage someday :)
And the singing... well, we all remember that singing mermaid... and the big ideas she planted in little girls' heads:

"Wish I could be.... part of that world..."

Logan  has "dreamed" of acting or singing or just somehow ending up "on the Disney Channel", but based on her shy nature, we have never really pursued it.

Not to mention, we didn't feel like a career in that industry is always an easy companion with maintaining certain standards.

But recently, one of Logan's dear cousins (and friend) (and fellow Pink Bedroom Junior Society Club Member) was cast in an upcoming television show.

Her cousin's success added to the positive effect on her confidence and comfort in front of people that have resulted from UpWard Cheer, helped Logan muster enough courage to go to an audition herself.

On Friday, she asked me, "Couldn't I just search for auditions online and see if anything decent (wholesome) comes up?"
I told her I didn't see why not.
She jumped online immediately.

What she discovered was that Actors, Musicians, & Talent for Christ (AMTC) was in town... the very next day.

We looked at their web site, we talked to Coach Dad once the boy's game had ended and with only a few hours to go before the audition, Logan chose a song and a monologue to use at the audition.

The audition was across town, on the other side of The Big City ( I so hate driving there!) and directly following her game... so we knew we'd be hustling to make it - and we were right- we ran about 15 minutes late- (a fact NOT helped in the least by Google Maps and the truck's GPS conspiring together to send us 15 minutes in the direction of a back entrance when  2 minutes of straight driving would have gotten us to the front gate (Grrr!)

But, we had called and they had assured us we would be fine to come on and sit in on the informational meeting. You see, we knew from the beginning that the audition was to be accepted/invited to the talent management company... not for any one specific role. The information session was to make sure everyone was clear on that, to put forth the Christian foundation of the company as well as highlight some of their "success" stories.

I have tried to balance everything I've seen and experienced against those who claim that this set up is a  scam. I have seen modeling agencies use a similar format where the audition was a front for taking modeling classes.. I have concluded that this set up is likely the way AMTC generates the necessary revenue to operate their company, but not necessarily a scam...more like those Art Institute Aptitude tests...maybe you're good at it...maybe not... if so, there's a course you can take and further develop your skills and knowledge...if not, ah, well... what did you lose?

Because no money was asked to audition and all of the information was shared before auditions occurred, there was no feel of bait and switch or high pressure obligation.

We chose to do the audition because of the aforementioned courage that had been mustered... even a community theatre audition is good for someone who needs practice... so, to that end, because there was no initial cost, we really had nothing to lose.

From a spiritual standpoint, I believe in the founder's sincerity when she shares her conversion story, but I can also understand why some people have claimed it was just a convenient re-branding scheme...especially in light that they are now a non-profit ministry. Only the founder and God know for certain, but we must take people at their word unless and until they give us a reason to doubt them. The emphasis on prayer and God's will in roles that work out or do not as well as the focus on modesty and age appropriate materials made me comfortable with the organization. I do not believe we are aligned completely theologically- it appears that there is a more charismatic slant to the leadership at AMTC- but I didn't hear anything that would cause me concern over Logan taking classes from them or being in their company...

Logan Makes Oatmeal

Logan is a morning person... sometimes.

Logan's oatmeal creation was a decidedly happy one.
She wanted to share it with you.
SMILE and have a nutritious day, ya'll.

Hey! UpWards....

...are you gonna win today? ....You know all you gotta do is put your mind to it, do it do it ...UPWARDS!

::Repeat ONE MILLION times::

Seriously.
Around our house these days, even the boys are walking around sing-song-ing cheer chants. Like chewing gum ground into shag carpet...(yes, first hand analogy) the lilting cheers are just stuck...and good.

Logan's first game was Saturday. She's loving it and already sad that her cheer career ends the same year it began
(UpWards stops at age 12 and we are unaware of local options that include both an honorable atmosphere and a lot of clothes ;)
Thankfully, the Brewer Brothers and *Coach Dad weren't due on the ball field this past weekend and were able to be there. The coming weekends between now and November aren't always so pleasantly blended...

Fisher was a big help with Riley- they played catch with her new bouncy ball. (She seriously loves the ball... I have to pry it from her hands to put her to bed...she doesn't understand why it can't sleep in the bed with her :)

He kept her entertained so well, in fact, that I had plenty of time to grab a cup of coffee from the concession stand and run upstairs to take a few pictures... because, at some point, when we looked around to find Chandler, we spotted him above us,  running the camera.

He's been showing a growing interest in running the lights, sound board etc at church.
At one point, on Saturday, a buddy offered to take over the camera controls to  give him a break- at which Chan promptly kicked his buddy in the shin...he wants you to know I'm exaggerating... it was just a light nudge :)  No, really- he didn't do any of that, but he wasn't interested in a break. He's developing a new hobby...

Meanwhile-
Logan cheered her heart out. And she was very sparkly while doing so (because we had sprayed her down with glitter.... and good.)

Thanks in part to her brother, there is an archive of the game here. You can spot Lo during the first 40 seconds and then again around minute mark 27:00

Here's the little bit of video my tired old camera was able to capture:

We have practice tonight. Logan is so excited to learn some new cheers (and we are so happy there will be a few more options on this ever-looping playlist in our heads)

Her game this weekend starts at 9:30, if you can't be there you can tune in live @ FBFirst.com... don't expect the cheerleaders to get a LOT of screen (scream?) time, but they open both the 9:30 and 11 games as well as provide a little segue entertainment during the half ("Now that the cheerleaders have directed your attention to center court, please listen to the message this pastor would like to share... "  tricky Baptists!)

* While walking through a frozen food aisle,Rye spotted this box and called the cover model DaDa :)
