Who needs whiskey when you've got Willie?
I drowned my problems in a bowl of this peach cobbler like concoction last night, while watching The Prestige and trying to figure out how I, too could make myself disappear . . . it didn't help as now there's more of me to try and make vanish....but, yum, it was worth every calorie.

Dream Off

Ever see one of those soft shoe face offs? "Anything you can do, I can do better" set to the beat of tapping feet, all in the name of fun and dance...

Seems Little Sister and I are competing for that beautiful multicolored cloak and the title of Family Joseph(ine) this week...

She sent me her own crazy dream and last night, as if I had to declare an answer, I too, had another strange adventure in Dreamland ...which I won't bother to describe because, like other people's vacation photos, I know other people's dreams can only hold your interest if they include nudity.

What I woke with was this realization, and I may be a few centuries behind here, but " If you can dream it, it's a possibility" (which at this very moment, in another web tab, I am discovering, is sort of a Walt Disney quote and/or franchise, too)

What seemed a new and fabulous thought to me had a lot to do with construction and creation in general.

In my dream, I entered a building whose stairwell drastically narrowed as it ascended upward, eventually dwindling to little more than ledges on which to sit or use for further upward mobility until the ledges had faded and flattened into the ceiling itself. Upon reaching the rafters, one found herself dwelling amongst various fixtures and furniture of antique persuasion, where she would promptly have a cup of something with a crunchy, buttery something else to dip in it, as she discussed items of business and interest with others dwelling in the rafters nearby.
(Furniture on the ceiling- how very Wonderland-ish!)

I figure, if I state it in as many different ways as possible, perhaps I can make it make sense or can glean from it the obvious message I dreamed it for... I'll keep working on that. Meanwhile, I leave you with the broader, more generally applied idea:

Dreams can be fantastically warped, and I think, with the proper attention paid, transcribed by the dreamer into reality, for the rest of us to enjoy.

In my case, seems all I need is a quick degree in Architecture and perhaps, Engineering, and I could share with the rest of ya's a structure so different and new and exciting that you couldn't help but want to walk in.

...construction should be complete at the end of the week....

Joseph

Previously, in Constantinople, I called for a Daniel to step forward... ha!

And no one corrected me... I suppose y'all know me well enough to understand I cannot and should never be corrected...

But I'm not to big to correct myself...as long as I get credit and am widely recognized for such a brave and noble act.

I can't believe it took a week to dawn on me that it wasn't Daniel who was the dreamer of dreams... everyone knows it was Noah...

Tim Carnes Article

Article by Michael Kraft in the Charlotte Conservative News about Dad's David & Goliath like declaration:

by Michel Kraft
“Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.”
Abraham Lincoln
Or better yet, Abraham Lincoln on Lindsey Graham and others that do not represent the best interests of America.
Those who rise up will come up from nothing and from the ground to lead us. We will once again look to the ordinary man to take the place of those that lose touch or turn their backs on Americans and the rules of law.
Perhaps Tim Carnes? Who? (Exactly) Who and why not?Apparently Tim is a “never-been” politician but always been American Conservative.
He has offered his service to our country, and we support any true conservative or sensible moderate that opposes Lindsey Graham.
Visit: http://www.carnesforsenate.com/
Or get a taste for his views on the world in this mini-overview.The following are the views of Tim Carnes who is running for South Carolina’s senate seat currently held by Lindsey Graham.

*** “I believe it is crucial that we win the war being fought in Iraq. I believe the stability of the Middle East is in question if Iraq is allowed to be controlled by Muslim extremists.”

*** “Illegally entering this country is a crime and there should be no amnesty for these individuals who have broken our laws”

*** “All Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies should be empowered and required to enforce all immigration laws.”

*** “Life begins at conception.Life is a gift from our God and Creator.”
*** “I support the Fair Tax Plan. You can read the complete details of the Fair Tax Plan here:
Fairtax.org

*** “I do not believe the government is the answer to all problems. I believe that smaller government is better and history has taught us that every major social program undertaken by the government proves ineffective and costs more than it is projected when conceived. ”

*** “I believe small government is better than large government. Every area of the government should be scrutinized and reduced in size.”

*** “Freedom of speech is a fundamental right of every American. Free speech shall not be limited or restrained by law. Congress shall make no law which restricts the free exercise of the 1st amendment.”

I hope Tim will write a bit more about what he would do with the opportunity to serve the great state of South Carolina.
Tim, feel free to send your ideals through to us at editor-at-charlotteconservatiove.com and allow us to help you remove Graham and use his seat for the service of honest Americans.

EVAN ALMIGHTY

Opted for Evan Almighty last night, over Transformers, since the outing was to be a family affair.

Good Movie.

Moving on to the real reason for this post...

I've posted (read: GRUMBLED) about this before, way back before the Great Erase

I think I had titled it something like W.W.J.D.D. ( What Would James Dobson Do? or Rules to Live By (in order to remain a member of the "club")

It isn't that I don't esteem JD's advice, and even TAKE it on many given issues in life... some of the gripe is that, without some sort of handy, pocket sized reference book as to what The Man would(or wouldn't) say or do at any given moment, I find myself doubting the "Christianity" of my actions...I experience the tingling sensation of paralysis running througout my faculties. I know, I know! I see the puss oozing out of this wound... it is ugly and in need of repair, but it is akin to the counselor needing therapy... I see the problem, I admit there is a problem, I analyze and describe the problem in depth and I am even willing to embrace the problem-- FIXING the problem is another matter entirely. Especially since these Jimmy D tendencies are deeply ingrained- have been since my birth.

What does this obvious quirk of mine have to do with Evan Almighty? I plan to tell you that now....

As usual, when deciding on a movie, I went over to Plugged In Magazine Online- "We count the cuss words for you!" - I checked out Transformers first and appreciatively accepted the advice that this film wasn't content I'd want to take my young children to ... I moved on to Evan Almighty, a movie I had been wanting to see and figured was a sure bet with its PG rating...and for the most part, I was right. The reviewer threw a caution flag here or there but overall gave a positive conclusion and even a slight amount of praise to the movie makers for cleaning up their act since Bruce Almighty's debut.

The bee got trapped in my bonnet when I read the special notice from James Dobson (HIMSELF!) at the conclusion of the review... at first I thought it was going to be an extra thumbs up, as in the case of The Passion of The Christ, instead it was an " I disagree with this review" notation.

He's the head honcho, he can do that, I know, but it just made me bristle. It made me think rebellious, "he's out of touch with reality" thoughts, because in order to earn his seal of approval the movie needs to basically become LifeWay Curriculum. He gives it merits because it is clean, he WISHES he could recommend it to you. . . but he simply can't because God is portrayed too much as, well, as one of us.

All in all, I came away with a message that, as a Christ Follower, did not leave me expecting God to pop up in the taxi cab behind me a la' Morgan Freeman, rather I was reminded that, though I don't see him, He is there... He is always there (and everywhere else, too.) Running from Him is futile and no matter how crazy the project He asks you to undertake, in the end, His plans are far better than our own (cue that great scene where God laughs at Evan's notions of having his own plans)

"Lo, I am with you always" - Doesn't Dr. Dobson believe that too?

Someone pulled God out of that dusty, ancient, steel box most folks like to keep him locked away in, painted Him accessible, complete with human qualities, including a sense of humor, and conveyed nuggets of truth to the masses but because it didn't include four homonetical points or a passing of the plate, it needs a special memo saying " I can't reccomend it and I hope you feel guilty if you go"
(theater concession stands CAN sort of feel like a really deep collection plate. . . if it helps )

Please...

So, it wasn't theologically sound? So, what!

It wasn't meant to be a worship service, but entertainment. An idea set to motion for people of all walks, not just Christian folks...

Can't we give credit where it is due and set our piety aside long enough to enjoy a family movie?

I appreciate all that the Focus group does to promote and protect families, I am not without respect.
In fact, I RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE with Dr. Dobson on this, and tip my hat to this reviewer.
I feel that, even amongst the current kiddie fare in theaters this summer, Evan Almighty trumps most of the animated "Blockbusters" we've been offered to enjoy with our families.

There was no special footnote at the end of Shrek 3's review, nor Rattatouille...or any other recent "kid's movie". The content in those other movies didn't assert a direct claim on things to do with God, but they made just as many erroneous and theologically shaky statements as those that have prompted this Post It note from Dobson.

In our case, the issues that did arise served as excellent talking points on the drive home ("But, God isn't BLACK!'- was an excellent opportunity to discuss God's nature and appearance (or lack thereof) with our children... surely family communication is part of the Focus agenda?!)

The time spent with our children was wholesome and fun. Watching them laugh at the funny scenes without cringing that it was a crass attempt at humor they were seeing on screen was worth the cost in tickets and popcorn- those talking points were like bonuses.

Read the review for yourself, and then the note that follows:

I am inclined to believe such a foot note from the Mothership wasn't really necessary, and that in some cases,- like this one- it would do our little "club" a service to lighten up and loosen the collar a bit.
We've got to teach respect for the Holy, yes. This movie doesn't prevent that.
Sitting too high on one's horse prevents encounters of the most intimate kind... the kind involving others.

Then again, I can be downright evil and human in nature... so perhaps I am best ignored.

Constantinople

I woke with a word in my head:

CONSTANTINOPLE

ok...so, I should probably hold off on theater popcorn so close to bedtime, eh?

well, of course, despite its absolute absurdity, I googled Constantinople, because it isn't everyday I wake with words already on my tongue . . . and imagine that I have found no earth shattering revelations nor even coincidental occurrences... some mildly interesting trivia and a bit of a history lesson perhaps... SO, if there is a Daniel in the crowd, who would like to step forward with an interpretation, I would be most amused...

(heck, I got the Wiki link for Constantinople to prove I'm game for most anything... I googled my dream, you see?)

Congratulations TJ

Good bye Tyler Brewer, Hello Tyler Johnson!

May this official, "legalized" welcome into your family prove to be the catalyst you've hoped for, the change of scenery that makes all the difference.

Carol Hurte

Mrs. Carol Hurte passed away this weekend after a recent sudden illness rounded a corner of no return. She is to be visited with tonight- her body, not her soul-then buried tomorrow. What a sad day, what a profound loss.

Carol had a devoted husband of many years as well as two grown daughters- one married and one who was to be married in four days' time.

She was young.

She was integral in the daily operation of a large church, but had been just as integral 25 years ago when the church was a third its current size.

I remember thinking of her as sort of a Door Bouncer for the Preacher when I worked at the church as a teen... you had to cross her desk to get to him, and well... it had better be important!

:)

Oh! and she could sing... my, could she ever!

It has been several years since I was in my home church back in North Augusta, but it makes no difference, I hear her name and that is enough to set off her husky rendition of "Ship Ahoy" in my memory. I can still see her in the old sanctuary, under the fluorescent lights arranged in the ceiling to form a cross, kicking that leg up as she reached for air and a note that seemed to dwell in the the very depths of the sea itself, to belt out " .... from my soul I can say "Bless the Lord"

She could make you see that small, storm tossed vessel, and the strong arm of the Captain reaching out to save...

She knew the Peace Speaker and It was Well with her soul ...

When she sang, you could see Him too, just passing over a grassy field extending His hand towards you... and it was well with your Soul too-- at least until she sang the last note.

Beautiful Music has drifted from Earth's shores through Heaven's Gates and we are forever more deaf and mute without her here...

Oh, I am sure Mrs Carol is just fine this morning aboard ol' Zion. It is the rest of us who hurt, who will miss her so. We hurt for our own loss and we hurt more for the loss we know this will be for her family. We want to comfort and to erase a pain so deep . . . but it is in that very pain that we see just how deeply she was loved upon this earth. It is the salt of our tears that heals the gash to our hearts as much as it can be healed this side of Heaven.

Miss Carol, we will miss your beautiful voice. Things around Victory will never be the same as when you were with us...

Steve, Becky, Katie and family- time and distance cannot erase the sadness created in my heart for you. May this season of tears be caught in Heaven's bottle and returned to you as rains of happiness over fields of joy. You are, of course, in our thoughts and prayers . . . oh that there were something more than those, to offer you as a balm, a salve for your pain... but He is enough... He will be...hold Him to it because He promised to BE...

Carnes For Senate

Seems my ol' SC ink was foreshadowing of a sort... my dad has announced his intentions to run for SC Senate...

Hemingway vs O. Henry

In preparation for the Keys trip, I checked out every Hemingway volume available at the Islands Branch library... I got less than a chapter into ISLANDS IN THE STREAM before losing interest and replacing my road trip read with 41 STORIES by O. Henry
(a.k.a. William Sydney Porter)

In my humble opinion, the Keys and Hemingway are fitting of each other... therein is some great stuff contained, but fly don't drive... the homestretch can be a long and winding journey otherwise.

I finished the forty first O. Henry story last night and plan to search out more... though the verbiage is antique, the stories kept me from ever reclaiming any of the Hemingway stuff during the trip. In the 41 selected short stories there was a lot of humor, plenty of lost souls, and a gauzy, transparent veil into O. Henry's own life, now that history causes hindsight to be so easily obtained.

When I checked the book out, it was like most things that go well for me... on the wings of a whimsical wind... I didn't check it out with knowledge of Porter's time in Honduras or penchant for tropical settings...I just happened across it on my way to the check out desk. The read proved to fit in amongst the "cocoanut" palms and iguanas every bit as well as The Old Man and The Sea, however.

Pleasantly surprised, you could say

Also-O. Henry has convinced me to try liquor . . . Absinthe more specifically. Will keep you all posted on how that one turns out, but I can't imagine it being any more pleasant than than a shot of Nyquil...

(No Worries Mom, I am pretty sure it is somewhat more difficult to obtain than say, Vodka ~ though not illegal~ in the US...twill be awhile before I am a complete loss to "the Drink" anyway)

I'm Back

So-- it's been a while...
I've been to Key West to swim in the deep blue sea- but I'm back home in Savannah now and I should be back in regular circulation soon, but I've got some computer issues to resolve before I'll be back DAILY (a tiny disagreement, our PC on the front lawn... believe me, the story is too long to get into right now)

I'm working at getting a few photos up, but between the computer "glitch" and Yahoo Photos closing down, it may be a while before I can sort and label the 200+ pictures from our trip..here's one to hold you over:
